In 1963, Ingram joined the Navy to study aviation electronics, but instead was drawn to the medical field after witnessing an outbreak of meningitis in a dispensary. He decided to join the Hospital Corps after graduating from medical school and was assigned to the 7th Marines. After graduating, he volunteered for the infamous C Company and was sent to Vietnam with his fellow Marines.

After serving in the Marines in the south Pacific during World War II, Mr. Ingram went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Eastern Illinois University. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the American Cancer Society Foundation, and was awarded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award for International Service in 2004.
