The relationship between parents and children is always very different, but also very special. And if some children were fortunate enough to grow up in a complete family, others live with the memories of that small period of time spent with mom or dad who passed away early. Lisa Marie Presley lost her father when she was only 9 years old.
King of rock and roll
Elvis Presley’s fantastic musical career began in the 50s, but by the mid-1970s everything had changed. Over the years, Elvis’ physical and mental health deteriorated. After his divorce from his wife Priscilla, he became increasingly dependent on potent sedatives, plus he gained noticeable weight, which did not contribute to retaining popularity. The last two years of his life, Elvis behaved rather strangely on stage and preferred a secluded life with minimal contact with society.
In August 1977, the 42-year-old singer was found unconscious on the bathroom floor and taken to the hospital, where he was soon gone. He is buried on the grounds of his Graceland mansion, and his grave has become a place of pilgrimage for fans from all over the world.
Death of Elvis
Little Lisa Marie, who was in Graceland that tragic day, saw her dying father.
“I don’t like to talk about it,” Lisa admits. – It was 4 o’clock in the morning, and I had to sleep, but he came to me to kiss. And that was the last time I saw him alive. “
The next day, Lisa Marie went to her father, but saw that he was lying unconscious, and his bride Ginger Alden was rushing about him. Frightened, Lisa called Linda Thompson, Elvis’ ex-girlfriend. Linda and Lisa had a great relationship, and they often called up. However, the phone call on August 16 was especially scary. Remembering that day, Linda Thompson says:
“She said:“ This is Lisa. My dad is dead! “
Linda could not believe the news of Elvis’s death, and she tried to explain to Lisa that perhaps her father was simply ill, but the girl insisted:
“No, he’s dead. They told me he was dead. Nobody knows about it yet, but I was told that he died. He suffocated on the carpet. “
Lisa Marie’s parting gift
The singer’s coffin was displayed in Graceland so that people could say goodbye to him, and it was then that nine-year-old Lisa went to the funeral planner Robert Kendall with an unusual request.
Kendall recalls that Lisa went to the coffin and asked him: “Mr. Kendall, can I tell Dad this?” The girl had a thin metal bracelet in her hands. Although Kendall and Lisa’s mother Priscilla tried to dissuade her, Lisa was determined and wanted to leave her secret gift to her father as a keepsake.
Kendall finally gave up and asked the girl where she would like to put the bracelet. Lisa pointed to her wrist, whereupon Kendall put the bracelet on Elvis’s arm. After Lisa left, Priscilla Presley asked Kendall to remove the bracelet, as the ex-wife was afraid that fans who came to say goodbye to their idol would take him away. And then Kendall hid his daughter’s farewell gift to Elvis under his shirt.
The singer was first buried next to his mother in the family crypt, but after fans tried to open the crypt and check if Elvis was really dead, in October 1977 the singer’s ashes were reburied on the grounds of his Graceland mansion.
