Hollis Johnson is an American baker who won Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship when she was only twelve. Hollis lived in Jacksonville, Florida at the time and auditioned for the show while living there.
She created a delicious four-layer lemon cake that won her $10,000 and an appearance on Duff Goldman’s show Charm City Cakes; now featured as part of his bakery menu!
Early Life and Education
Hollis Johnson was an influential astronomer who made significant contributions to our understanding of stars. He was particularly well known for his studies of peculiar red giant star types – particularly their chemical composition, chromospheres and atmospheres – using different instruments such as Hubble Space Telescope.
Mr. Desch was also an officer on the Board of Directors for the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) and served on their Observatories Visiting Committee, in addition to being part of their Working Group on Peculiar Red Giant Stars at IAU.
As a freshman runner for the Catholic Knights cross country team, he enjoyed competing and all of the travel involved with it as well as enjoying team camaraderie and making new friends along the way.
Professional Career
Johnson is living proof that perseverance and hard work will always lead to success despite challenges along life’s journey. He has spoken at numerous youth groups and featured on world-famous talk shows alike.
He boasts over 12 years of experience teaching and administering at Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham, Alabama where he currently works as assistant principal.

He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served missions in Denmark. He married Reba Rowan, with whom they have two children together. Over his lifetime he received many honors and awards including being honored as Georgia State FFA/FCCLA Camp Director as well as induction into Berrien County Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Hollis entered Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship when she was 12, living in Jacksonville, Florida at that time and auditioning because anyone between ages 8-13 was eligible to compete.
Duff Goldman was impressed with her baking abilities and said he hoped she wouldn’t open a bakery within 10 miles of him. She won the competition, and continues baking as a hobby; currently making cakes for special events is her latest passion.
