The school’s athletic program consists of varsity and JV teams. The school’s basketball program is known for its strong defensive play. Despite its small size, the team has a good chance of winning the state championship each year.

The school’s stadium is located in Sunnymede, right next to Jefferson Intermediate School. The school opened in 1940 as part of a Public Works Administration and Federal Works Agency project, but was delayed due to the polio epidemic of the 1930s. The auditorium was once the only large performing stage in South Bend, and has hosted many historical events. Former Indiana State champion John Wooden spoke at the school.

However, the spirited players were so determined to win that they bought VHS tapes from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame to remember the game. They were so excited about their accomplishments that they were even willing to buy them for the alumni. This was a great year for them, as they had the chance to play in front of the local media.

In 1973, the John Adams High School basketball team became an elite team. The team reached the state final in the state championship. It was coached by former Indiana Pacers coach Craig Redman. The basketball program has won two national championships and 27 Indiana State Championships. In 2013, the Eagles beat the Anderson Indians and reached the state final. It is the first time in the history of the tournament that a school has reached the state title game.
