However, cancer returned to his throat last year. Through Facebook post he shared the news and informed fans that the past few months had been particularly challenging; further revealing he had been hospitalized with 24-hour care for treatment. “This is by far the hardest time in my life,” he wrote; vowing “to fight this until the very last second”.
On Wednesday night, Lance Mackey lost his battle. According to his family’s statement, he passed peacefully at age 52 with his beloved dogs by his side.
Lance was the first musher ever to win both the Yukon Quest and Iditarod races in 2007, becoming an historic double winner of both events simultaneously. Winning both awards meant more to him than winning just the Iditarod itself; his tough competition proved inspirational.
