True crime instead of a talk show: Arabella Kiesbauer celebrates her TV comeback

A television pro at first glance: Arabella Kiesbauer is self-confident, articulate and always has a big smile on his face. From 1994 to 2004, the native of Vienna presented around 300 episodes of the Talk show “Arabella” on ProSieben. For many people, the show was part of the regular afternoon programme. Arabella Kiesbauer confronted every topic, no matter how explosive, and chatted openly with her guests about everyday problems and taboos – similar to what was only known from American talk shows at the time. For “Arabella” the moderator was awarded the Bavarian Television Prize in 1994 “Best Talk Newcomer” excellent. At the time, Arabella Kiesbauer was just 25 years old.

She ended up in television by accident

It’s hard to imagine today that the Viennese originally didn’t want to work on television. Her parents ran a theatre, Arabella Kiesbauer herself studied journalism and theater studies.

“Actually, I wanted to follow in my parents’ footsteps and run the theater myself one day, but life had a different plan for me. In hindsight, everything turned out exactly as it should.”

Today, Arabella Kiesbauer is happy that a TV editor invited her to a presenter casting at a student party. “I almost didn’t go to the casting because I actually wanted to go on vacation. Luckily my parents talked me into it, so I introduced myself after all,” she says today with a laugh. She got her first job at the end of the 80s on the ORF youth show “X-Large”. In 1991 she started at ProSieben.

While Arabella Kiesbauer is still very present on television in Austria, things have been quieter about her in Germany lately. Now she’s back on TLC with two new formats. In the series “Arabella’s Crime Time – Crime in Sight” she goes on the trail of real criminal cases. The series not only shows original footage of the crimes, but also testimonies and voices from relatives. But how is it that the former talk show queen suddenly does true crime? During the preparations for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, the presenter had to deal with her excitement True Crime Podcasts discovered for themselves. Since then, Arabella Kiesbauer has primarily been a fan of American crime podcasts. When the offer for the new TLC format fluttered in, she didn’t hesitate for long. “The most important thing is that you’re happy. My grandmother always said wrinkles don’t hurt. I believe that a positive attitude, a smile, an inner radiance make a person beautiful.”

The 52-year-old herself shines the most when she is surrounded by her family and loved ones. Or when she rehearses new sweaty choreographies with her dance teacher. She can also play the piano, by the way.

“When I sit at the piano, I don’t think about anything else. I’m totally into the music, it’s a kind of meditation, something that nourishes my soul and enriches me. And that’s what it’s all about: nourishing the soul and to carry a good feeling in your heart. That works better than any cream.”
